Lewis & Clark Tour in Van or Horseback Trail Riding….

Come discover Lewis and Clark in Idaho. A Lewis & Clark Idaho vacation with Rawhide Outfitters offers a relaxing scenic Lewis & Clark Van tour or a wilderness horse trail ride where you can travel the historic trails and enjoy a delicious home made picnic lunch with Rawhide Outfitters as your tour guide. The Lemhi and Salmon River Valleys offer a rich historic journey of the Lewis & Clark Expedition. Opportunities to retrace the steps of Lewis and Clark in areas where little has changed since they were here, along with the Lemhi Valley being the home land of Sacajawea, continues to provide one of the most rewarding and authentic portions of the entire Lewis & Clark Trail.

The Corps of Discovery entered the Lemhi Valley on August 13, 1805 with the intent of exploring the feasibility of navigating the Salmon River in hopes of reaching the Pacific Coast. They wisely decided that no dugout canoe could safely navigate the Salmon River rapids, so they changed their course and opted for a somewhat less hazardous, but equally difficult dry-land route.

Lemhi Pass Lewis and Clark Tour by Van

Lewis Clark Van Tours, Sacajawea Center

Lemhi Pass Lewis and Clark Tour by Van: “The Continental Divide, at last!” This Lewis and Clark adventure tour starts at the **Sacajawea Interpretive Center located in the town of Salmon where there is a brief introduction given by our Lewis and Clark interpreter Mike Crosby. We proceed on up to the Lemhi Pass in our 15 passenger van with brief historic stops along the way. On top of Lemhi Pass is where Meriwether Lewis became the first European-American to cross the continental divide. We then proceed on to the sites of other firsts: the first time an American flag was unfurled west of the Rocky Mountains, and the expedition’s first encounter with Sacajawea’s people, the Lemhi Shoshoni. A picnic style lunch is provided and served under beautiful shady pine trees. Restroom facilities are available. Although this historic area has changed very little in 200 years, an air conditioned van and sumptuous lunch will make your Lewis and Clark journey through it quite different from that experienced by the Corps of Discovery. Walking parts of the trail will be an option.

You’ll see and experience the mountain trail, crossing ridges and high saddles far above the river, riding gentle, sturdy mountain horses. You’ll learn about Clark’s reconnaissance along the river he named “Lewis’s River” and the start of the alternate journey over the rugged Lost Trail Pass.
